''Developing leadership in young people through practical work opportunities''
This five year funded programme commenced in June 2002 and is successful in meeting it's aims to recruit, train and support young people aged 17 -25 to develop new skills and experiencing personal challenges and growth. The young leaders - or 'Gappers' are full-time volunteers and have the opportunity to run their own project over the course of a year with the support of an organisation. Skills for Working Futures pledges to support 50% of the placement costs, but will support the host organisation in applying for the remainder.
There are numerous benefits of having involvement with a Skills for Working Futures placement. These include:
• For the Individual young leader: An opportunity to develop own interests and skills further, accredited training, practical work based experience, development of professional and personal skills, Greater self confidence, and a sense of personal satisfaction. Gappers also receive essential living expenses and a small weekly allowance and on completion of the placement they could receive an Achievement Award of up to £1,100.
• For the Host organisation: An opportunity to invest in a committed and enthusiastic young volunteer, who will bring new energy and new opportunities, new projects, and new networks to the organisation. Also to developing future capacity of the organisation and gaining a sense of organisational satisfaction through organic growth.
• For the Community: A range of new or extended community services and provisions run by local people, developing community pride.
To date the projects have been as varied as the young leaders, but all have introduced new services and provision for young people in their communities.
